There are four levels of membership:

SINGING TEACHER MEMBERSHIP: Singing Teacher Members must be technical singing voice teachers of good professional repute who are teaching at the time of application and who have taught singing for at least five years. Singing Teacher Members may vote, be appointed to the Board, and hold elected office. Dues: $60.00 per year.

APPRENTICE TEACHER MEMBERSHIP: Apprentice Teachers are technical singing voice teachers with less than five years of professional teaching experience. Upon completion of the fifth year, Apprentice Teacher Members shall become full Singing Teacher Members. Apprentice Teacher Members may vote, may be appointed to the Board, but may not hold elected office. Dues: $55.00 per year.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP: Associate Members are persons involved in professions  or activities which support and/or relate to the art of singing, such as vocal coaches, conductors, composers, choral directors, vocal health professionals, speech pathologists, etc. Associate members may vote, be appointed to the Board, and hold elected office. Dues: $55.00 per year.

FRIEND/STUDENT MEMBERSHIP: Friends/Student Members are persons who are in sympathy with the aims of the organization and/or are students. A Student is defined as being under age 25 and who is either a student of a NYSTA member or holds a valid ID from an institution of higher learning. A Friend member may be any age. Friends and Students may not vote nor hold elected office, but may be appointed to the Board. Dues: $25.00 per year

NYSTA's Board of Directors consists of between twelve and sixteen prominent members of the organization. Any member in any category may serve on the Board, but a majority of the Board must be Singing Teacher Members.

All applicatants for membership must:

  • Fully complete the application form, including a resume or curriculum vitae listing your professional performance and/or educational and teaching experience.
  • Click on the radial button agreeing to the NYSTA Code of Ethics
  • Be sponsored by an active member. 
    -- Don't have a sponsor? Don't worry. Just leave that field blank and we will assist you in finding one. Your sponsor will welcome you into the organization and help answer any questions you might have about NYSTA's calendar of events, courses, and governance.

After you click the "Submit" button on the application form you will be redirected to the payment page, where you can select your level of membership and pay your first year membership dues.

When all of your application materials and membership dues have been received, you will receive confirmation from the registrar via e-mail. Your application will then be presented to the Board of Directors and will be voted upon.

Upon acceptance you will receive a new member packet via email. This process can take approximately 7 - 30 days. If your application is denied for any reason, you will be refunded the full amount of your first year dues paid online.
