Biography

Dora Ohrenstein was President of the New York Singing Teacher's Association (2002 - 2004). She has also been on the faculties of NYU, Drew Univeristy, and Wagner College. Her pedagogical articles have been published in Classical Singer magazine and the NATS Journal of Singing and she has been a presenter at the annual Symposium of the Voice Foundation in Philadephia.

Ms. Ohrenstein has been widely hailed as a gifted interpreter of art song, vocal chamber works and contemporary music. A singer of striking versatility, she is equally at home in cabaret and pop music. Her recently released solo CD on Koch International Classics, Restless Spirits, was praised in the on-line music journal, andante, as "a fascinating assortment of wild women! In her recital of works by Adès, Poulenc, Purcell, Bolcom, Shields, and Hoiby, soprano Ohrenstein offers the vocal equivalent of Meryl Streep, bringing an equally high degree of artistry to all the colorful characters she portrays."

Ms. Ohrenstein was solo vocalist of the Philip Glass Ensemble for over a decade, appearing at major halls and festivals throughout the world, including numerous appearances at Carnegie and Avery Fischer Halls, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Boston's Symphony Hall, the Frankfurt Opera, Sydney Opera House, Adelaide Festival, and tours to Germany, Italy, Japan, and Australia.

Teaching Philosophy

I teach professionals as well as student singers in a great variety of musical genres, and have sung all kinds of music myself. Everything I teach is well founded in scientific fact -- no hocus pocus! I have great ears and can successfully diagnose vocal problems and help you overcome them.

Finding flexibility and releasing tension in all parts of the vocal mechanism are my specialties. I have built young voices from the ground up and helped professional singers with technical problems work their way back to healthy, free vocal production. I also work with actors and business people on effective and healthy use of their speaking voices.
Creativity, spontaneity and performance skills are also high on my teaching agenda. Singing is a primal art that should come from a deep emotional place, and I help the singer find strong personal connections to their voices.

I will be honest about your career potential and direct you towards other courses of study that can help achieve your career goals.

As all this sounds terribly serious, let me add, I am a lot of fun to work with. Lessons are demanding and full of information, but also inspiring and exhilarating.
