There are four levels of membership:
Singing Teacher Members must be teachers of singing of good professional repute who are teaching at the time of application and who have taught singing for at least five years. Application for membership must be accompanied by a resumé and sponsorship of one active member. Singing Teacher Members may vote, hold office and be appointed to the Board. Dues: $60.00 per year.
Apprentice Teachers are teachers of singing with less than five years of professional teaching experience. Application for membership must be accompanied by a resume and sponsorship of one Singing Teacher Member. Upon completion of the fifth year, Apprentice Teacher Members shall become Singing Teacher Members. Apprentice Teacher Members may vote, may not hold office, but may be appointed to the Board. Dues: $55.00 per year.
Associate Members are persons involved in activities or professions which support and/or relate to the art of singing, such as coaches, conductors, composers, vocal health professionals, speech pathologists, etc. Associate members may vote, hold office and be appointed to the Board. Dues: $55.00 per year.
Friends/Student Members are persons who are in sympathy with the aims of the organization or are students. A Student is defined as being under age 25 and who is either a student of a NYSTA member or holds a valid ID from an institution of higher learning. Friends and Students may not vote nor hold office, but may be appointed to the Board. Dues: $25.00 per year
NYSTA's Board of Directors consists of between twelve and sixteen members of the organization. Any member in any category may serve on the Board, but a majority of the Board must be Singing Teacher members. All members may vote in NYSTA-wide elections, and all members are entitled to member rates for events.
All applications for membership must be accompanied by a resume or curriculum vitae listing your professional and educational background. In addition, all applicants must agree to and sign the Code of Ethics. If you need assistance finding a sponsor please contact our Registrar, Maria Argyros: mariaa@nyst.org.
After you click the "Apply Now" button on the application form you will be redirected to the 'Membership Options' Page, where you can select your level of membership and pay your first year membership dues. When all of your application materials and membership dues have been received, you will receive confirmation from the registrar via e-mail. Your application will then be presented at the next scheduled board meeting at which time it will be voted upon. Upon acceptance you will receive a new member packet in the mail and your name will appear on our membership list. This process will take approximately 30 days. If your application is denied for any reason, you will be refunded the full amount of dues paid online. You can also download the NYSTA Application Form and Code of Ethics to send in, with a check for your first year's dues, via US Postal Service.
